SAFE SCHOOLS: An ally’s guide for reducing homophobia & transphobia

Date: Monday, February 7th, 2022

Time: 7:00 – 9:00pm

Location: Zoom link here ; Event information

The 2021 Lexington Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) shows 1 in 4 of Lexington’s middle/high school students identify as LGBTQ+ and that these students are up to 4.5 times as likely to be bullied at school. This relentless bullying, micro aggressions and the dogged political campaigns targeting transgender youth result in 3 out of 4 transgender students, in Lexington, feeling hopeless every day. We also know these experiences result in more missed school days, lower grades and low self-esteem.

These statistics are products of the conditions in which LGBTQ+ students live. Since students spend so much time in school, our schools are a critical component to addressing the problems; however, our schools cannot do this alone. We all have the power to change things for the better.

Please join this LHS PTO & School Health Advisory Council “SHAC” forum for parents, educators, students, and community members of all gender identities and sexual orientations as Jeff Perrotti, MA Department of Education’s Safe School’s Program for LGBTQ+ Youth and a panel who will share their personal experiences, talk about what is and isn’t helpful and discuss easy ways we all can help.
